There is a small percentage of people who eat food simply to sustain their life. I don’t understand these people. Every meal is an opportunity to be bowled over, excite someone, or just feel peace and… comfort.
We southerners know a lot about food as comfort. We cook our vegetables past death, to the point of almost unrecognizable tenderness. And then we smoother them in cream or bacon or both.
I’d say this is the concept behind Comfort where southern comfort food is served on the daily. But, this summer, Jason Alley decided to take a note from our northern Philly friends and introduced submarine sandwiches made with the super soft white sub roll and real deal italian meats. We’re talking’ cappy ham and mortadella (what even is cappy ham?).
I strolled in at 2:50pm, starved to the point of jitteriness and ordered the Adrian- genoa salami, sharp provolone, shredded lettuce, tomato, onion, oil and vinegar, and mayonnaise. That’s what’s listed on the menu, but that oil and vinegar has got some spices in there. We know there is oregano, but what else? What else?
All sandwich names have a Rocky theme and the place is named after the character Paulie, seen in the signed, framed photo brought out to me to shoot. My sandwich, The Adrian, was delicious. The soft bread and top notch salami and the smooth provolone melded into a puddle of goodness in my mouth and I ate the whole thing. I mean, the chef who made it, wrote me a note and told me to enjoy it. So, I just followed orders. You should too. Get to The Paulie at Comfort. Make it before 3pm. 2:50 is a perfect time.
