What I love about this recipe is that you can just literally throw things together and bake up a batch any ole day with whatever you have around. I got inspired from my leftover bacon fat. I put my bacon on a cookie sheet in the oven and pour off the fat, but rarely use it for my cooking (Chef Vivian Howard thinks this is shameful, but I like my arteries and my dog likes treats). Of course you don’t have to have bacon fat to make this awesome, but my dog thinks you do. She’s been known to lick the solidified fat out of the bowl cooling on the counter. She’s not well behaved. I blame myself. Everyone else does too.
Unless you have a dog with sensitivities, you just need dry ingredients (flour) + wet ingredients (mashed fruit and/or veg. and water) + egg (+flavoring- bacon fat, PB, fruit or veg.) = dog biscuit. I used mashed fruit and vegetables from my juicer after a day of thinking healthy. The green bits are spinach and kale and the big hunks of orange are carrots as well as evidence that I need a better juicer. But, you don’t need a juicer at all. You can leave this out OR use applesauce or bananas or any fruit that is about to go bad in your fridge. My Maddy Girl loves strawberries. There are a few in this batch too.
I used to look up and follow recipes and then I realized that my dog is a dog. She eats anything (except celery and leafy greens) and often from the floor. She digs up rotten things and consumes them and while I disapprove of this and discourage it, it made me realize that difficult and fancy recipes for treats were not needed. I could clean out my fridge and save bucks on her treats that, let’s face it, I’m going to give her spoiled, rotten mouth not matter how bad her behavior is. Wait, I just realized the root of the problem.
Anyway, your dog is gonna love you for making these or a version of them. Don’t fret, just mix and bake with love and don’t torture your dog with a photo shoot like I did. I’m sure PETA would not approve these tortured looks.
- 1ish cup fresh and veg. mash from your juicer (no tomatoes, grapes, onions)
- 1ish cup flour (any kind)
- ¼ish cup peanut butter
- ½ish cup bacon fat (oil, butter, or more PB works too)
- ¼ish cup wheat bran
- ¼ish cup wheat germ
- 1 egg
- water/ stock if needed
- Mix all the ingredients until you get the consistency of cookie dough.
- Add water or a flavored stock if not wet enough. Add more dry ingredients if too wet.
- Roll out and slice with a knife (as I did here) or use cookie cutters.
- Bake at 350 for about an hour. You are just trying to dry out the biscuits so this may take less or more time depending on how wet your dough is.
